Caulfield Cup Winner Mer de Glace to Stand in Turkey

The 2019 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (G1) winner Mer de Glace has been retired from the racetrack and will stand in Turkey.

The Hisashi Shimizu-trained son of Rulership  arrived in Australia to win the Caulfield Cup before running sixth in the Lexus Melbourne Cup (G1) the following month.

Unfortunately, that would prove to be his final career start after he suffered a tendon injury, with connections unable to bring him back to race fitness.

The winner of three graded stakes in Japan, Mer de Glace retires with a record of eight wins from 19 starts and earnings of $3,950,825.

The 6-year-old, out of the Sunday Silence mare Glacier Blue, struck in the Niigata Daishoten (G3) in April 2019 to kickstart a great campaign. He also took the Naruo Kinen (G3) and Kokura Kinen (G3), with 1 1/4 miles or 1 1/2 miles arguably being his best distance.

Connections will be hoping that Mer de Grace works out as well as Daredevil  , who was relocated from Turkey to Lane’s End Farm off the back of the excellent 2020 campaigns of daughters Shedaresthedevil  and Swiss Skydiver , who finished one-two in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), respectively, and who have both started 2021 with a bang.

Leading second-crop sire Daredevil is standing the breeding season in Kentucky as the property of the Jockey Club of Turkey.
