Lothenbach Stables’ homebred stakes winner Charlie’s Penny will be scratched out of the Feb. 13 Rachel Alexandra Stakes Presented by Fasig-Tipton (G2) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots due to an injury that will take her out of training for several months, according to trainer Chris Block. The 3-year-old daughter of Race Day is expected to make a full recovery.
“It is not a career-ending situation but it will set us back, and hopefully, she’ll be back at 100%,” said Block, adding that the issue was discovered the morning of Feb. 9. “In one way, we’re fortunate to have caught something that could have become a lot worse had we not caught it, so I feel relieved. It is unfortunate because I was looking forward to Saturday. I felt she had a big chance. She would have had to take a big step up, but I feel she was capable of it.”
Charlie’s Penny will lay up at Chad and Laurie Stewart’s Grace Full Oaks Training Center near Ocala, Fla.
Out of the Warrior’s Reward daughter and stakes producer Sweet Lorraine, Charlie’s Penny has won three times and placed once from five starts. She won at first asking by seven lengths Sept. 17 at Arlington International Racecourse. She was coming into the Rachel Alexandra off a 3 1/4-length win in the Jan. 16 Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds.
