Review: This Saatva Bed Frame is Built to Last a Lifetime

Thanks to the Saatva bed frame, I finally feel like I have the mature sleep setup I’ve always wanted. For some context, during our recent cross-country move, I gave my boyfriend an ultimatum: Once we got to our new home, I needed a bed with a proper headboard. There wasn’t exactly an “or else” attached to that demand, but as far as I was concerned, there are few things that say “I’m doing all right in life” quite like a grown-up bedroom set. As two adults in their early 30s, it felt like time.

Having already picked out a Saatva mattress, he went all in and purchased the brand’s Santorini platform bed frame in the Graphite Vintage Velvet fabric.

The Delivery

Like Saatva’s mattresses, the frames are built to order—it took about three weeks before the brand called to schedule a delivery time. On delivery day a “white glove” team (they didn’t actually wear white gloves but did bring all the necessary tools) came to set up the bed. After showing them where I wanted it, I retreated back to my work so I didn’t hover over the process. That said, considering it took two professionals over an hour to set it up, I’m glad that service was included. Having to do it ourselves likely would have been a true test of our relationship.

The Specs

Though I had my reservations about the purchase while we were waiting for its arrival (it’s more than I would have paid, even being the most economical of the Saatva bed frames), once it was set up I liked it right off the bat. With a simple, classic design, it’s not going to go out of style anytime soon and won’t distract from, only elevate, our other bedroom pieces. The bed frame has clean lines and minimalist appeal with its modest headboard and metal feet. The fabric is high-quality, luxuriously soft to the touch, and, mercifully, resistant to staining. The frame has just enough of a lip to help our aging dog step up onto the bed easier (but juts out enough that my partner frequently bangs his shin on it when he gets up in the middle of the night). And there’s enough space underneath that we can easily store small boxes and extra luggage.

The Verdict

Considering that the EPA estimates 9 million tons of furniture is tossed every year, I feel good knowing that Saatva ensures that the wood they use is sustainably sourced and kiln-dried, so it should last a lifetime. I’m willing to bet the frame’s life span will be significantly longer than similarly priced ones from popular brick-and-mortar retailers.

And while the cost still makes me wince a bit, the Saatva bed frame is sleek and design-forward, and it gives me peace of mind knowing that it comes with a lifetime warranty, so it’s likely the last one we’ll ever buy (or at least for a very, very long time).
